( Personality ) :
Bandou has the horrible tendency to latch onto small, extremely insignificant instances from the past and hold onto them as grudges against people. This is shown the most with his childhood friend Shouhei who shows up to join the Red Clan, HOMRA. Shouhei immediately recognizes Bandou and tells everyone that they've always been great friends since they were kids. Bandou automatically gets defensive, saying he doesn't approve of this new guy joining the group and even tries to put Shouhei down and tells him to give up when the Red King give him this initiation test. Later in the manga chapter, we learn that this is because Bandou is holding a grudge against Shouhei from back in kindergarten. Apparently, the girl that Bandou had had a crush on back then had, instead, had a crush on Shouhei, and even though Shouhei didn't even like this girl, he'd given her a kiss, nonetheless. Of course this would crush a little six year old's who had just found love for the first time's heart, but to still be angry about that 14 years ago is fairly pathetic.
Though it goes a little beyond just being petty and stealing his first love. It's obvious that Bandou has a deep seeded jealously over his childhood friend, Shouhei. He does eventually admit to this, saying how he hates that it's always Shouhei! Shouhei! Shouhei! How he's the one who's always surrounded by friends and who's always being picked for teams and who's always winning, even if it's just by a small amount. Even after Shouhei gets accepted into HOMRA, we see scenes of all the members having a good time and trying to make him feel welcomed, while Bandou just sits in the background growing more and more angry and jealous.
But, while in their old school days together, Bandou always took the back seat to Shouhei's achievements, here in HOMRA, he can be the superior. Bandou takes full advantage of his seniority over Shouhei in the Red Clan, looking at it as payback in a way. It makes him feel like he's finally the winner in the little competitive game that they've been playing - although, really, this competition's only been going on in Bandou's mind. And he knows this. Which is another part of what really makes him angry with Shouhei. Because no matter how much he yells at him, or barks orders at him, or how many time he calls him an idiot, or gets jealous and angry at him for petty things, Shouhei never holds it against him. He always smiles and calls him his good friend. So Bandou never has anything he can justify his anger with (which just makes him more bitter!)
All this negative emotion leads to a very loud Bandou. Misaki Yata can attest to this, having personally taken on the task of making Bandou shut up when he spent the entire day whining about Shouhei getting everyone's attention. Even the Red Clan's right hand man, Izumo Kusanagi had to step in to get Bandou to calm down, forcefully grabbing the kid by the face and shoving him into a barstool before giving him the intimidating Izumo stare!
Though, beyond all the jealousy and pettiness and anger management issues, there's a sense of both humility and camaraderie that goes along with being part of the Red Clan. Once Bandou had heard that Shouhei had run off to rescue a friend of his from some drug lords, all on his own, he became furious with him. But this time, it wasn't over something petty. It was because Shouhei was honestly doing something stupid. He had joined HOMRA purely for the power it would give him and wasn't thinking about the comrades that come along with it. Bandou chased Shouhei down and yelled at him that this time of acting alone not only wasn't acceptable, but that he wasn't going to let him do it - that he would always be there for him anyway.
During their fight against the mobsters, Bandou fought loyalty by Shouhei's side, despite the anger he'd shown towards him so many days previous and despite all the bitterness he'd been holding inside against him. He even went as far as to block the blow of a lead pipe with his arm that was coming down for Shouhei's face. Bandou hardly even seemed aware of how selfless an act this was until Shouhei mentioned it later. His friend reminded him of how he'd done something similar when they were younger and saved him from drowning in a river, yet never expected anything in return. Bandou was then shocked to find out that Shouhei had always admired that humility he had.
Still, despite this bit of realization, Bandou's jealously still shines through - though he doesn't seem to yell at Shouhei quite as much! Kamamoto does get a dose of his jealous side when he, Chitose and Yata are faced with trying to combat the slender, tan version of himself that he transforms into during the summer months. At this point, Bandou becomes less of a raging jealous type and more of a scheming devious type. However, Chitose - the resident play boy of the HOMRA clan - is very much their leader during this mission, so that change could be more a result of the jealously of multiple males plotting together versus Bandou's singular petty grudges working on their own.
As the Memory of Red manga states briefly in the beginning of their chapters, Saburouta Bandou is a "quiet person", which I believe can be true when nothing that directly involves him is going on. He can be the one just sitting there, minding his own business - the quiet loner - quietly harboring anger against people and things he's observing that later, when the time comes, he will spout out in loud bursts that will throughly annoy anyone in the vicinity! But when it really matters, he will always be there for the people that are important to him - his true friends and fellow HOMRA members. And he will never expect anything in return for the sacrifices he makes to protect those people. He may be petty, but he's a loyal, selfless individual.
( Strengths/Weaknesses ) :
+ Like the other members of the Red Clan, Bandou has the power that the red aura gives them - a power over fire. Though not nearly as powerful as their King, Mikoto Suoh's flame, or even Izumo Kusanagi or Misaki Yata's, we can still assume Bandou gained a fair amount of strength when he joined the clan as he and Shouhei were able to take out a number of mobsters on their own - though eventually they were overcome, the fact that two 20-year-olds were able to stand up against mobsters at all says a lot. However, most of the time we see him using a bat or lead pipe to deal damage to whomever the Red Clan has altercations with. Clan members do also have the ability to attach their aura to items they are holding (i.e. making the lead pipe be a flame covered lead pipe.)
+ As we saw in his history, Bandou is a strong swimmer. Though he gives one of his usual petty complaints that, when they were younger, Shouhei's swimming time was 1.5 seconds better than his, he was still good enough at it to be able to save his friend when he was drowning in a river he'd foolishly jumped into.
+ Bandou makes a brief statement that he was pretty good at other sports, as well.
- He's been known to be terrible at keeping jobs, even being fired from some after only a few days on the job.
( Other Important Facts ) :
• Bandou's close friend, Shouhei Akagi always calls him San-chan. After hearing this nickname only once, Tatara Totsuka instantly began calling him it, as well.
• Bandou's Red Clan insignia mark is located on his stomach, right above his belly button. Shouhei points out that it's kind of a silly spot for it to be, but Bandou says that it's cool cause ever since he got it from Mikoto, he hasn't had a single stomach ache.
• Bandou makes a brief comment in the manga that he was kinda nerdy in school.
• Bandou always wears giant sunglasses and a black baseball cap. He also has the tendency to dress in a lot of layers, one of which is a hoodie that he wears, even in the summer. The hood is always up and over his hat. Essentially, almost his entire face and head is covered with garments…

[ The face that comes on the network might be a bit of a new one if you aren't one to stop by Bar HOMRA too often. Bandou's been in the city for a little bit now, but he can be fairly quiet unless you shout something across the network that gets him immediately riled up. Actually, you're more likely to hear from him 5 months from now, complaining about something you mentioned in a brief conversation you had way back when. But whatever, that hardly matters, at the moment. He's actually got a question to ask you all. ]
Hey uh, I was just wondering if there was any way we could check up on people from back home?
[ He's got a concerned look on - furrowed brow, downward gaze and all - but none of that is noticeable behind the giant black sunglasses the guy's wearing. The only thing you might catch is a bit of a pursed lip. Doesn't matter if you do, though, because Bandou's noticed his own telling features and gone straight into defense mode. Which is more telling than any expression! ]
IT'S NOT 'CAUSE I CARE OR ANYTHING!! tch
I just wanna make sure the idiot's not running off and doing anything stupid by himself!
[ Why was he getting defensive? These people don't know who he was talking about. ...Oh yeah, none of them know Shouhei! This is perfect! Suddenly Bandou's gritting his teeth a lot less and looking way more cocky and self confident. ]
I'm his boss, ya know! He looks up to me! He's gotta be totally lost without me there! Yeah...yeah I'm a pretty big deal back home. Perfect role model. Guy's lucky to have me, really.
So ah...yeah. Any chance of that contact thing being possible?
( Questions? Comments? Concerns? ) : Nope!
